Florida is likely to bear the brunt of climate change with perilous coastal flooding and an increased severity in tropical storms and hurricanes. So what has Florida done to break the cycle of burning fossil fuels generating greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming?

Until recently, very little.

California has a $3 billion solar rebate program and insures that home owners & businesses using photovoltaics can sell energy to utilities at the same rate the utilities charge. Why not in Florida?

solar energY New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, all of which have lower solar availability than Florida have done a far better job of installing solar capacity than Florida.

Florida has done a poor job diversifying its energy resources relying extensively on fossil fuels. With growing energy needs, utilities here are looking to more of the same. If built, these power plants would emit hundreds of millions of metric tons of carbon dioxide, the primary global warming pollutant.

Governor Crist has called on The Florida Public Service Commission to adopt a twenty percent Renewable Portfolio Standard. In the sunshine state we have an abundance of a free, non-polluting power source. Solar, along with energy efficiency measures can play a big role in reducing the need for more carbon dioxide emitting power plants.

Solar is a domestic, decentralized energy source that increases energy security and energy independence. Homes and businesses powered by solar are less vulnerable to increases in electricity costs and loss of power from storms and other grid failures. Businesses and residents can save energy and significant costs by investing in solar.

So well suited for solar, it’s called the sunshine state, why then aren’t solar panels found all over Florida on the rooftops of homes, businesses, and public buildings?

Where is Solar in the Sunshine State? is a television documentary in production which reveals the ecological consequences of Florida’s energy choices, and explores both opportunities and barriers that impact Florida’s ability to rely on the sun for more of its energy needs.
